Bitwiwerth is an independent editorial index of hotels, organised into four categories and nothing else: art hotels, capsule hotels, casino hotels and ice hotels. Each category holds four properties, written up at length, in prose.
The four categories were chosen because each one asks a different question of a building. An art hotel has to justify its collection. A capsule hotel has to make a very small space work. A casino hotel has to run a small town's worth of departments at once. An ice hotel has to be rebuilt every year. Put side by side, they describe the range of what the word hotel can cover.
Every entry is written from the same angle: what the building is, what distinguishes it, and what a stay there is actually like. We avoid precise figures — room counts, prices, distances to the metre — because they date fast and because they are not what makes a hotel worth reading about.
There are no star ratings here, no scores, no guest reviews and no booking engine. Nothing on this site is paid placement, and no hotel has approved its own write-up. If a property has changed hands, closed a wing or dropped the thing it was known for, we would rather hear about it than leave it standing.
The index is deliberately international. Properties are spread across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas, and no country is treated as the home market. A hotel appears here because it is a good example of its category, not because of where it sits.
